How to Write a News Update

When people think of news update, they often envision black-and-white articles in a newspaper or a recap on the nightly news. But news doesn’t have to be limited to larger scales – companies can create company-specific news updates that are important for their employees and the public. These types of updates can be a great way to increase employee morale, as well as give recognition for projects and accomplishments within the organization.

The key to writing an effective news article is to know your audience. Most news is geared toward a certain demographic, whether it’s a local community, an industry or even the viewers of a particular show. Attempt to narrow down this demographic whenever possible to ensure the most interest in your story.

When writing a news story, always begin with the most important information first. This technique is called the inverted pyramid, and it’s a great way to make sure that readers get the most crucial details of your story right away. It also helps those who only read part of the article to still receive all of the important facts.

Avoid putting your own opinion into your news articles. It’s okay to interview sources, but the content should not be dominated by your personal opinions and biases. Similarly, it’s usually inappropriate to use first names in news stories without a caption. Instead, use the person’s middle initial or full name if they’re known.
