What is World News?

World news is the media jargon for international coverage, or news about foreign countries and global subjects. It’s a specific subfield of journalism that is distinguished from “national” news or news about the domestic politics and events of the home country. The term may refer to stories sent by foreign correspondents or, more commonly, to news produced by news agencies.

Foreign (or world) news is a key component of most newspapers, magazines, radio and television broadcasts. It is also the focus of many news agency services that produce articles that are then sold in bulk via wire services or, more commonly, through the Internet. Such articles may be used by a number of different organizations, including other newspapers, magazines, radio and television broadcasters, and even intelligence and analysis services. News agencies usually have full-time journalists based in cities around the world, called correspondents. However, reporters who are not attached to a single news organization are sometimes known as stringers and often work for several at once. This allows them to move quickly from one story to another and cover the most important developments as they happen. This is particularly true in war zones or other places of heightened tension.
